Why Quiet Art Resonates in an Overstimulated Society

Finding Your Calm

Where the World Stops (12H x 12W inches) Acrylic on Canvas

Is your mind always racing? Do you find yourself restless and exhausted at the same time? Between technology, busy lifestyles, the daily news, the pressure of society and social media, it’s no secret that we live in an overstimulated world. For my younger readers, this might come as a bit of a surprise to you, as you’ve grown up with all of these things. For those of us who grew up in a world with landline telephones and one household computer, where our parents forced us to play outside for hours, this new world feels very different to us.

As I experience life, as I grow intellectually and emotionally through my experiences, I often find myself going back to basics. I am consciously seeking out ways to calm my mind from the daily chaos. I go on long nature walks, I meditate, I listen to music, I do yoga, and my biggest escape is of course, painting.

But how does this relate to collecting art? One of the most researched methods of relieving an overstimulated mind is seeking out a soothing space. There’s no space more important for us than our homes. I believe that is why I am coming across so many collectors who are purposefully seeking out quiet art to fill their home and workplace. It brings me so much joy to see a person walk into my art booth at a fine art show and simply exhale.

If you are feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or exhausted, you might consider setting up a space in your home, however big or small, surrounded by images, colors, and music that calm your mind. The arts have a magical way of bringing us peace, and sometimes we aren’t aware how desperately we need it, until we take the time to experience it.

With much love and gratitude,

Daniela
