The World We Inherit
Creating a Safer World Through Small Acts of Kindness
The Sky Mourns (Acrylic on Canvas) July 2017
I am at a stage in my art career where I think about how my artwork fits within a gallery or show before submitting my work. When I was young and starting out, I submitted to everything hoping someone would bite. As I grew and became more confident in my work, as I honed in on my craft as a fine artist and realized that my artwork carries purpose and evokes emotions for not only myself but others, as I built connections with collectors who understand the value and connect with my work on deep levels, I became a bit more selective in how I want to be seen as an artist.
At a recent fine art fair I was approached by a sweet, young woman who seemed to be taken aback by my work. She asked me if I would be able to participate in an upcoming gallery show entitled, “The World We Inherit - A Climate Gallery”. Immediately I felt connected to her cause, and I carefully selected one of my pieces specifically for this show.
Losing my love and life partner, Jeff, to Colon Cancer in December made me question a lot of things about this life, the environment that we live in, the food we eat, the care that we receive when we’re sick, and the world that we inherited from the many generations before us who shaped how the world operates.
This piece is titled, The Sky Mourns. It is an older piece that I created in July of 2017, but the meaning and emotions behind the piece hold true. This painting was created as a reflection of the sorrow that lingers from all the pain and tragedy in our world.
Today I am still very much in a heavy state of grief, and so naturally the world seems dark to me, and any sort of light is difficult to find. If you’ve lost someone close to you such as a spouse, a sibling, or a child, it is the most unbearable thing a person can go through, especially at a young age. In our case, I believe Jeff’s death could have been prevented, and it is very much the result of our environment. As I try to heal, I think about how I can do little things to make the world a better place, so that others might not have to suffer the way that we have.
If we all do that, if we all try to think of little ways we can help make the world a better place to live in, a safer place to live in, imagine what the small changes of many can do as a whole.
With much love and gratitude,
Daniela
